This is OUR Country
I have to wonder if Chevy knows that everyone hates their “This is our Country” ads and continues to run them because there is no such thing as bad publicity, or if they really don’t know how poorly received they are.

I’m from Indiana and, at birth, I think you’re required to pledge your allegiance to John Mellencamp. Everyone I know loves him. Everyone I know hates those commercials. He may singlehandedly lose his grip on his home state because of the saturation that is that ad campaign. Let it go Chevy.

For the record, I’m a huge Johnny Cougar fan, especially (warning: music cliche approaching) his early work. From his eponymous debut in ‘79 through Whenever We Wanted, he’s easily a top 10 artist for me. Lately, it hasn’t been as great, but a few songs here and there. I even liked “Our Country” when I first heard it — although it is a bit forced, it has elements of classic Mellencamp. Hearing it at *every* commercial break ever, though, has me feeling a little differently.

I should also point out that my curling club has access to Canadian TV, and they show the same commercial, except with Canadiana imagery instead of Americana and a different voice over. If I was Canadian, I might find this somewhat offensive — John Mellencamp obviously is not singing about my country. The Tragically Hip wasn’t available to do a cover?
